In 2024, keeping your technology updated crucial. A lot of people are not very tech savvy, they tend to keep older tech around to compensate. While this is great for convenience, nature hates stagnation and it will try to punish you for it.

The US Justice department said on Jan 31st that state sponsored Chinese hackers known as ‘Volt Typhoon’ infected hundreds of home/office routers of Americans. This also included Axis IP cameras but the DOJ did not mention them. These were old Cisco and Netgear routers that reached end of life, meaning they’re too old and no longer receive updates. When products reach end of life they are dangerous to their users because any new vulnerability that is found in them that hackers can exploit is now permanent and will not be fixed. This is why companies that use older unsupported products to fill a specific business need tend to take special measures with them. Like for example, not connecting them to the internet (air gapped).
