Notorious BIG The Hallowed - Intro to Hip-Hop part 3
Introducing Biggie Smalls from Brooklyn, NY the best to ever do it.
STOP: Please do not continue unless you have headphones or speakers. I recommend that you be alone for this ride. This is a musical experience. Please do not skip over any media. It’s there for a reason.
Live from Bedford-Stuyvesant the livest one who represented Brooklyn to the fullest. The Notorious BIG aka Biggie Smalls aka Christopher Wallace is our focus today. He’s a complicated figure and he’s the best or second best rapper who ever lived, depending on who you ask. Please give him and myself a chance to show you why that is, thank you.
Life and Times
Born in Crime ridden Brooklyn, New York in the 70s Biggie was raised by his Jamaican mother and got the nickname “BIG” at the age of 10 because he was fat. With his mother always at work Biggie was rumored to have had started dealing drugs by the age of 12. He also started rapping as a teenager for people on the street. That takes us to the first thing we’ll take a look at today. The definition of raw talent, watch this.
Despite the raw talent his life of crime continued. “At age 17 in 1989, Wallace dropped out of high school and became more involved in crime. That same year in 1989, he was arrested on weapons charges in Brooklyn and sentenced to five years' probation. In 1990, he was arrested on a violation of his probation. A year later, Wallace was arrested in North Carolina for dealing crack cocaine. He spent nine months in jail before making bail.”-Wikipedia
The Road To Glory
After his release from jail he dropped the demo tape “Microphone Murderer”. Remember what I said about raw talent??? Let’s take a listen.
After this tape dropped it set off a chain of events and it eventually landed on the lap of Sean Jean Combs later to be known as P. Diddy or Puff Daddy. He was an A&R at Uptown Records at the time and arranged to meet with biggie and the rest was all a dream.
“If you’re legendary they'll paint your face on them bricks. I just passed a mural dedicated to my dog. Niggas hated on em they ain't wanna see em ball” -Curren$y
The next song we’ll be listening to is the world famous “Juicy”.
Pen on Fire
Biggie was a genius because of story telling abilities. The guy literally described movie scenes in some of his songs and has a voice that you can put on any beat and will still sounds good. It’s incredible.
Next Song we’ll be listening to is “Niggas Bleed” where he paints a picture of criminal activity. Listen intently, close your eyes and let your imagination wander.
Crazy right???? Now listen to it again. Put yourself in his shoes.
Now that you’ve listened to “Niggas Bleed” for the second time. Dim the lights, it’s time to get a little dark. Like I said in the beginning of this post. Biggie is a complicated figure who traverses through both light and deep darkness throughout his albums.
Brace yourself and press play, close your eyes.

I don’t want to rob of you of the gift of discovery, I’ll stop here and let you venture into the world of The Notorious BIG on your own. I’ve showed you the light and I’ve showed the darkness and now it’s up to you. One last song before we go though :)
Something great.
