Trump Tariffs
President Donald Trump abruptly cut off trade talks with Canada on Friday. The halt was in response to Canada's new tax targeting U.S. technology firms, which the President called a “blatant attack.”
President Trump announced he would set a new tariff rate on Canadian goods within the next week. The move came as a surprise, just hours after the U.S. Treasury Secretary had touted progress in other key tariff negotiations. The President has indicated he could extend the tariff deadline or shorten it, stating, “I'd like to just send letters out to everybody: Congratulations. You're paying 25 per cent tariffs.”
New York City
State Assembly member Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic socialist from Queens, has claimed a historic victory in the NYC Democratic primary, defeating the formidable former Governor Andrew Cuomo. He will now face incumbent mayor Eric Adams, who was elected as a Democrat in 2021, but running for a second term as an independent. The switch was due to a federal corruption investigation that was perceived by Adams as an “attack” on him by the Democratic party. Adams was later pardoned by president Trump.
