BLS Head Fired Amid Controversial Jobs Report Revisions
The U.S. economy is at the center of a political firestorm after the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) issued significant downward revisions to its jobs reports for previous months, erasing prior reported gains. The initial report for the last month already showed sharply slowing growth, with only 73,000 jobs added. In a move that Democrats, some Republicans and many economists have condemned as political interference, President Trump fired the head of the BLS shortly after the revised numbers were published. Critics argue the move is an attempt to undermine the credibility of the independent agency and pressure it over unfavorable economic data leading into an election cycle.
