Today I’m updating you on geopolitical events I think you should know about. This was supposed to come out last weekend, but due to the India-Pakistan skirmishes, I had to push it back. When huge events are unfolding, I have to give them my undivided attention so I don’t miss details or the general feel of the event. People also usually tend to want to hear about them and nothing else.
Alright, let’s get into it.
India - Pakistan Update
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance called both Indian and Pakistani prime ministers and senior officials to press for de-escalation. A ceasefire was announced the morning of Saturday, May 10. However, within hours, each side accused the other of violating the terms. As of writing this article, the ceasefire is still holding. However, there has been no movement on the Indus Water Treaty, which India suspended.
Russia - Ukraine
On May 11, Russian President Putin offered to hold peace talks with Ukraine in Turkey on May 15 "without preconditions." According to U.S. and Ukrainian officials, the Russian team that showed up did not include any decision-makers and made grand demands. This further shows that Russia is not looking for peace and only calls for "negotiations" as a way to stall and temporarily avoid looking like the bad guys.
